The day after Thanksgiving is about more than just left over turkey sandwiches.

For years, the Friday after the holiday has meant one thing at Conant and Mascenic: alumni basketball games. With former players home to visit families, it gives the current squads a chance to get in some on court work before the season gets going against the players that used to wear the very same uniforms.

But this year at Conant, the annual festivities are taking on a new approach.

Instead of playing against the girls of previous Conant seasons, the defending Division III champion girls will host ConVal for a preseason scrimmage at 5 p.m., adding a new layer to the rivalry, as the two squads will not face each other in the regular season.

The 2018 girls championship banner will be unveiled during the festivities.

This year’s varsity boys will play host to the 1998 Class M state championship team that is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 72-51 victory over Coe-Brown. It was the second of 10 state titles in school history. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. There will be an alumni versus alumni after the boys game.

At Mascenic, the current girls team, led by recent hire Sean Young, will play the alumni at 5 p.m. The likes of Jordyn Babin, Sydney Letter and Autumn Firmin will represent the Vikings teams from the past in the 5 p.m. showdown.

The 2018-19 Mascenic boys will have their hands full with the Stauffeneker brothers, Jared and Brett, suiting up for the alumni, along with Drew Rines. The game will tip off at 6:30 p.m.

The Conant girls will begin their title defense on Nov. 30 when they play host to Belmont. The Conant boys travel to Newport on Dec. 7 for their opener.

The Mascenic boys host Campbell on Dec. 11 to start their Division III schedule, while the Macenic girls begin the Young-era on the road at Epping on Nov. 30.
