Monadnock Folklore Society will present the Peterborough First Saturday Contra Dance will be Sept. 2 from 8 to 11 p.m. at Peterborough Town House, 1 Grove St.
The dance will feature Luke Donforth calling with music from Sycamore, Cedar Stanistreet (fiddle), Michael Sokolovsky (guitar and feet) and guest Jake Grieco on flute.
Contra dance is a style of folk dance which has flourished in New England since the 1700s. Partners form lines and dance a short sequence of steps with their neighbors. Over the course of the dance, each couple travels the length of the line and dances with every other couple. Dancers are welcome to bring a partner or a group of friends but it’s not necessary; traditionally, dancers are encouraged to change partners throughout the evening.
There will be a workshop for new dancers at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $12 to $20 on a sliding scale, but flexible. Masks are optional. The dance will use the gender-free calling terms larks and robins.
