The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the start of World War II in the United States led to several news items in the Dec. 11, 1941, issue of The Peterborough Transcript.

Of immediate concern was “the safety of a local boy, John P. Armstrong son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Benjamin Armstrong who is in the Japanese war area.”

Meanwhile, the start of war led to fast action to prepare for anything, including “blackouts or air raids” in Peterborough.

The Laymen’s League held a debate on whether strikes should be disallowed, and Dublin School founder Paul Lehmann said it was “our duty to support our leaders, act in unison, and do all we can individually to help prosecute the war.”
