By the time the 1984-85 high school basketball season rolled around, no Conant High School team had won a state championship in any sport since the baseball team in 1956.

But by the time the boys’ basketball team celebrated its 58-44 win over Hillsboro to give the Orioles the Class M title and the front page of the March 14, 1985, Peterborough Transcript showed coach Jim Adams hoisted aloft by his players, the drought had already been broken.

Conant’s girls’ team had seen to that two weeks earlier, beating Franklin 53-49 to complete a 21-0 season with a state title. (The boys were 22-1.) However, it didn’t make Page 1 of the Feb. 28 issue, as a fire at the former Ray Moore Motors garage in Jaffrey was featured.

Conant’s boys and girls turned the double-title trick again in 2010, winning the Class M championship in consecutive games on the same night at Southern New Hampshire University.
