Friday brought dry and comfortable conditions for South Meadow School to host a dual cross-country meet. The skies were cloudy and the breeze was chilly, but the competition was hot. The red of Jaffrey-Rindge Middle School was ready to see if they could put an early Halloween-scare into the blue-clad SMS runners.

The girls race started first and JRMS looked poised to conquer the well-armed competition. Eight-grader Amarah Lapinsky mixed it up with the SMS top runners, and soon took the lead. By the halfway point, Lapinsky and teammate Neve Mormando began to pull away from the rest. In the meantime, Amber Gnoza, JRMS, battled with SMS runner Jennifer Hopkins for 3rd place. The JRMS team effort looked good, so far, with a lock on three of the top four places.

And when the cattail seeds and autumn leaves settled, Lapinsky strode to an comfortable win, with a time of 14:43 over the 2.1 mile course. Looking strong, Mormando was five seconds back in second. Hopkins (SMS, 15:00) won the battle for third, with Gnoza (JRMS, 15:10) sealing up fourth place. This would be a close team competition, depending on the depth of each team.

Then it happened… a sea of blue! Eight SMS runners streamed across the finish line, taking fifth through 12th places, before a rallying Ashlynd Carey (JRMS, 13th, 18:06) would complete her run. Also scoring for SMS were Lyla Somero (fifth, 15:31,) Sydney Borges (sixth, 15:43,) Ava Van Horn (seventh, 16:07,) and Anna Laurie (eighth, 16:29.) JRMS’s fifth runner, Maya Pressman, would cross the line in 18th place with a time of 18:37. SMS would narrowly claim the girls’ team title by a score of 29 to 30.

The boys team race was less in doubt as the first JRMS runner, John Morrilly (sixth, 13:15) was shut out from the top five, and his next teammate, Austen Richard (14:20) would finish in 20th. For SMS, Max Cail would finish first in 11:40, followed by Oliver Wilson (second, 11:58,) K. McMahon (3rd, 12:46,) Aiden Campbell (fourth, 13:16,) and Xan White (fifth, 12:53.) Other JRMS scoring runners were Mason Karpinski (29th, 16:22,) Trayton Chapman (30th, 16:23,) and Kadin Rinaldi (31st, 16:24.) Final team scores were SMS with 15, and JRMS with 48.
