Crotched Mountain Foundation pools will be closed to the public this summer, while the organization looks into new ways to fund their use.

David Johnson, vice president of marketing for Crotched Mountain, said Thursday the pools will close to the public as of July 1, throughout the summer. The pools will still be available to Crotched Mountain School students.

“We will still offer swimming and aquatics to our students, but we are suspending public operations,” Johnson said. “It’s incredibly expensive to run a pool and were unable to subsidize it without a partner. We’re a residential special education school and that’s our primary mission. We understand that it has been a nice resource for the public, and it wasn’t an easy decision.”

Johnson said he could not guarantee the pool would re-open to the public in the fall, but said the organization is “actively pursuing” ways to fund pool operations, including partnering with other organizations and private donations.

“It’s not a ‘close it up, board it up’ operation. We’re evaluating the services we can offer to the public, and we will see where we stand in the fall,” Johnson said.

Among public programs offered by Crotched Mountain are lap swimming, family swim hours, and swimming lessons. Fees are charged for memberships and lessons, but they aren’t enough to cover costs, Johnson said.

Johnson said the organization isn’t eliminating its aquatics staff since the pools and Crotched Mountain’s private beachfront will remain open for students. But he said staff hours may be adjusted.

The pools will close to the public on July 1. Monthly and multi-visit passes are no longer being offered, but visitors can still purchase one-day passes until July for $5. All passes will expire on June 30.

The YMCA Allard Center in Goffstown is offering a discounted membership rate for swim lessons for Crotched Mountain swimmers.
