ConVal’s star wrestler Dan Curran finished fifth in New England in the 170-lb. weight class after beating a handful of opponents and losing to the defending champ by decision.

Curran beat Maine state runner-up Dylan Strong of Marshwood by pinfall in just 1:47 to open the competition. Then, Curran won an 8-1 decision over Connecticut’s Gino Barrata of Danbury for a semifinal berth.

There, Curran ran into the stiffest competition he’s faced all year – Paul Calo of Southington. Calo, the defending New England champ, was fresh off a loss to Ryan Devivo of Xavier in the Connecticut state finals, and he had something to prove. Curran was up 3-2 with 30 seconds remaining when Calo made a defensive takedown for a 4-3 lead. Curran turned things around and got Calo on his back, but the defending champ wriggled out just ahead of the referee’s three-count and escaped with the win by decision.

Calo would go on to win the New England championship; Curran placed fifth after losing by decision to Devivo.

Curran’s all-time record, which is also ConVal’s school record for wins, is complete at 167-32.
