The Mascenic Regional School Board announced Dr. Christine Martin will be the district’s new superintendent during its meeting Monday evening.

Martin will be replacing the district’s current superintendent, Steve Russell, effective July 1. She was chosen over fellow superintendent finalist, and the district’s current assistant superintendent Jim Lewis.

The district has signed a one-year contract for an annual salary of $121,000 with Martin, according to School Board Vice-Chair Rachel Anderson. The contract is renewable for up to two additional one-year terms if both Martin and the board agree.

Current Superintendent Steve Russell current makes a $126,818 annual salary, according to the New Hampshire Department of Education.

“I’m extremely excited. I think what I learned about the district in my research prior to the interviews and visits, and having great conversations with the parents and teachers, really reinforces my impression that our views align,” Martin said in an interview Tuesday morning. “It seems like we have a match here.”

Martin said she will come into the district with a 100-day entry plan, which she said “will be driven by the goals of the district and the vision that has already been set out by the district.”

Her first task, she said, will be to learn the district’s values.

“The most important thing as a district’s new superintendent is to be a good listener and a good learner,” she said. “What’s important is to take everything in and meet with as many people as possible.”

Martin said in her conversations so far, it has been clear to her that there is a value in Mascenic on not having “too narrow a scope” when it comes to what students will be pursuing after high school. About an equal number of students enter the workforce or trade school as go to a four-year college upon graduation.

“That message was sent to me loud and clear, both from the parents and in talking with the students,” she said. “And it’s my job to look at what the community   values and make sure everyone gr aduates with the skills they need and want to do in life.”
