Greenville fire crews doused an excavator that caught on fire at a business on Fitchburg Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Chief Ben Buttrick said that the department responded to Greater Waste Solutions at around 3 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, the excavator was fully involved.

“People on the scene had already attempted to put out the fire using extinguishers, but had been unsuccessful,” Buttrick said.

Buttrick said there was immediate concern because of the proximity of the vehicle to other hazards. It was about 50 feet from a building, and 15 feet from stored fuel tanks. Crews were able to put out the flames before they spread, and the fire was limited to the excavator. No one was injured.

Buttrick said the vehicle was a total loss, and it is not immediately apparent what caused the fire to erupt.

The Greenville Fire Department was aided on scene by the Mason and Ashby fire departments.
