Avery McClain’s first goal of the season put the Mascenic field hockey team up for good over ConVal Tuesday as the Vikings scored early and held on for a 2-0 win.

McClain came up from the defensive end on a first-half corner, received a cross from Bella Knisley and chopped the ball past Cougar keeper Mack Anderson for the game’s deciding tally.

“I just ended up on the post at the right time,” McClain said after her second career goal. “That got us going a little bit and fired us up to keep going.”

McClain added an insurance goal in the second half, filling the scoring void left by Alannah Johnson, out for the game with an injury.

“I knew that scoring was going to be something we had to focus on,” said Mascenic head coach Selena Shaw. “Fortunately, Avery stepped up.”

ConVal, in the grips of a illness going around the high school, was short a few players as well and had to reconfigure their lineup accordingly.

“Today’s game was truly outside our comfort zone,” said head coach Carrie Whittemore. “We had people in all different places.”

Laramie Wilson moved back to defense and Molly Dishong slid into the midfield, while Bre Hutchinson and Eliza Harris moved into more prominent offensive roles. Despite the reconfiguration, ConVal was able to create their share of chances; senior forward Cruz DellaSanta did redirect the ball past Mascenic keeper Becca Staton once, but the play was whistled dead, and senior forward Jacqueline Madeja had a couple close calls, but ConVal was never able to get on the board.

“We had a couple of incredible flurries down there,” Whittemore said. “If even one of those had gone in, it could have changed the tide of things.”

In front of Anderson, who played a gutsy game in net, the Cougars played strong defense to keep the score close.

“They keep their sticks down,” Shaw said, “so if you’re not going around them, they’re going to stop the ball. That makes it tough. You can’t get through easily.”

Mascenic, ahead for the majority of the game, seemed content to sit back and wait for ConVal to strike before renewing their diligence; fortunately for the Vikings, their opponents never broke through.

“It was a little bit bunchy,” Shaw said, “a little bit slower of a game, but a win’s a win and we’ll take it.”

Captain Kailyn Matson played a solid game in the midfield and Emma Charland stepped up in the defensive end for Mascenic. The Vikings are 5-4, right in the playoff mix, and are off again until they travel to ConVal for a rematch next Tuesday.

Now 2-6 with six games left, ConVal needs to turn things around quickly; after getting a taste of the postseason last year, the Cougar seniors want it again, and are trying to impart some urgency to their younger counterparts.

“They’ve never had the experience of making playoffs,” DellaSanta said. “They don’t know how good it feels.”

The senior captains are confident they can send their team on one last ride down the stretch of the regular season.

“We are going to,” said Shannon Allen. “There’s no other option. It’s kind of a growing process, but it’s a ‘we need to win’ process too.”

ConVal hosts Monadnock (1-8) for homecoming Friday at 4 p.m.

Conant 4, Monadnock 0

Elizabeth Gonyea scored a hat-trick against Monadnock Tuesday to lead the Orioles to their fifth win of the season, equaling their win total from last year with five games left to play. Teagan Kirby added a goal and an assist and played very well, said head coach Jackie Brown, as did Lex Gallagher. Bella Hayes had an assist as well.

Tessa Spingola had six saves for her second shutout of the season.

Conant (5-4) was scheduled to play at Stevens Wednesday after press time and at St. Thomas Aquinas (1-4-1) Friday.
