One person was injured after a welding accident that sparked a two-alarm fire in a commercial building on 31 Tremont Street in Wilton on Thursday evening.

The building contains three businesses, and on Thursday night, just before 10 p.m., was only occupied by one person, according to Wilton Fire Chief Don Nourse. That person was in the center unit, and was welding a vehicle, when a fire sparked and the vehicle caught fire. The Fire Department is still investigating, but the cause of the fire is considered accidental, Nourse said.

The man called 911, and was able to exit the building but did suffer burns, which were treated and released by emergency personnel on the scene, according to Nourse.

When crews arrived, there was heavy fire in the center business, where the fire originated, and heavy smoke coming from the entire building, Nourse said.

A second alarm was struck bringing in additional resources. The fire extended into the attic area, causing significant damage to the building. Two of the three businesses, including Merrill’s Metal Shop, are expected displaced for an extended period due to the damage caused by the fire, smoke and water used to extinguish the fire.

“There’s significant smoke damage throughout the building, but it’s not an entire loss,” Nourse said. “One unit was very minor damage, just smoke damage. We appreciate everyone’s promt response to minimize the damage to the building.”

Crews brought the fire under control at 11 p.m. The scene was cleared at about 1:08 a.m. Tremont Street was closed for the duration of the fire.

Wilton Fire was assisted at the scene by Wilton Police, Wilton Ambulance, as well as the Milford, Amherst, Greenville, Brookline and Lyndeborough Fire Departments. The Mont Vernon Fire Department provided coverage for the Wilton fire station.
