A lawn tractor fire in a garage Friday afternoon on Cheney Avenue in Peterborough destroyed the garage, heavily damaged a house and sent a Jaffrey firefighter to Monadnock Community Hospital with a minor injury.

Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker said the call came shortly after 3:30 p.m., after one of the home’s occupants had just finished cutting the lawn. Walker was the first firefighter to arrive. He requested a second alarm and then a third in order to have more firefighters available due to the heat.

Walker said the garage door was open, and firefighters initially attacked the fire from the outside before going in. The fire was brought under control at 4:18 p.m.

According to Walker, the garage was a total loss, and the house sustained significant fire and smoke damage. The two occupants are staying with family in town, he said.

In addition to Peterborough, the fire departments from Jaffrey, Hancock, Dublin, Temple, Antrim, Bennington, New Ipswich, Milford, Hillsborough and Keene responded, as did Jaffrey, Antrim and Peterborough ambulance.
