Samantha and R.J. Mickle of Hillsborough welcomed their first daughter – and the first baby born at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough – Thursday morning.

“We have a new little pickle,” said R.J., who runs Mickle’s Pickle Farm, where he produces pickles, relishes and hot sauces, in Hillsborough, in addition to his day job on the janitorial staff at Hillsboro-Deering Elementary School.

Lilyanne Virginia Mickle was born by Caesarean section at 7:54 a.m. on Jan. 2, weighing 7 pounds and 8 ounces, measuring 18 inches.

She will be the third child in the couple’s blended family, and their first together, Samantha said. Her brothers, Timothy, 8, and Jonah, 3, were both hoping for a girl.

“They wanted a sister. They can get sick of each other, so they wanted a little girl to play with,” she said.

“Little do they know, she’s going to be running the show,” joked R.J.

On their first visit, Timothy was so excited to hold her, he could barely be convinced to stand still long enough to do so, Samantha said, while their younger son, Jonah, “just kept staring at her.” He may have been slightly disappointed that she wasn’t immediately ready to play, Samantha said.

R.J. said he’s excited to show his new daughter the farm life, and hopes his youngest will be more interested than her brothers.

“The boys usually want to eat more than they want to help pick,” R.J. said.

R.J. and Samantha were neighbors growing up in Hillsborough and even share the same birthday, but didn’t become close until after leaving high school, and then they were friends for nearly a decade before becoming a couple. They have been together for the past four years and finally tied the knot in August.

“It’s weird how life will sometime throw the person meant to be your significant other just next door,” R.J. said.

Lilyanne was a breach baby, and the Mickles planned a C-section, which Samantha said made her worry about the baby bonding with her, which turned out not to be a problem was the little bundle of joy arrived, she said.

“She’s been awesome,” she said. “She’s an eating machine.”
