Flip Home Decor by Silly Jilly Designs has opened a second location on Grove Street in Peterborough.

Owner Jill Lazzaro got her interest in home decor when she started painting distressed antique furniture when she started to sell some at Robin’s Egg, an antique home decor store in Amherst. She rented a spot in the store for five years, and started to dream about owning her own home decor store.

Five years ago, a retail spot opened up on the Milford oval, and she decided to move forward with that dream.

“I just went for it,” Lazzaro said.

Now, she’s successful enough to open up a second location in Peterborough, at the location of the former Peterborough Shoe Store on Grove Street.

Lazzaro said she spends the first half of her week “treasure hunting,” through yard, barn and estate sales, seeking out likely pieces to rehabilitate. Most of her work has a rustic farm aesthetic with a distressed paint finish. It’s a look that’s highly in demand at the moment, Lazzaro said, fueled by shows such as HGTV’s Fixer Upper with Joanna Gaines. And it’s a look she herself enjoys, Lazzaro said.

“I like an eclectic blend of things,” she said. “I’m not into a matchy-matchy style. I tend to buy what I love.”

Lazzaro said she knows almost immediately when she lays her eyes on a piece whether it has potential.

“I look for something with good character and good form, sturdy and of good quality,” she said. Sometimes, it’s a matter of painting it. On other pieces, she’ll do something a little more creative, such as a dresser she bought from someone’s storage unity, with drawers she decoupaged with a poster with a floral pattern.

“You really have to feel out the piece and what will be good for it,” she said. “Generally, you get a vibe from the piece. Each one talks to me.”

And seeing the transformation is one of her favorite parts of the job.

“I determine what it needs and give it some love. The best part is taking something that doesn’t look so great and turning it into something cool.”

In addition to the pieces Lazzaro refurbishes, the store also sells original furniture pieces built by her father, and can take custom orders.

The store also carries a variety of other home decor items, including pillows, art, wooden signs, soaps, and other locally-made items including up-cycled clothing and jewelry.

Flip Home Decor is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
