Letter: Sharing concern about schools

Thank you to Janine Lesser for her fact-based, well-written column “Wondering about the future of education” (Jan. 7).

Taxes are high, and our school system costs more than many other per pupil. We, as voters, own the responsibility for some of the cost. The voters spoke and told our School Board that we want to keep our small schools. The taxes are a burden on all taxpayers. That is also a truth.

We know that there is no tax equity in New Hampshire. It appears that our state’s government favors keeping taxes low for the wealthiest towns and citizens over funding education fairly. Public education is a precious right. Public schools educate without political or religious bias. Public schools educate all students and do not discriminate based on need, potential, race, religion or identity. Public schools employ highly trained professionals.

A free and educated society needs strong public schools. I, too, share esser’s concerns for the future of high-quality public education.
