In October, 13-year-old Emily Hanks was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic lymphoma, which is a form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Following the news, 11 team members started a Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk fundraising page titled “For the Love of Em.” The team surpassed its goal of $3,000 and raised a grand total of $7,700 from nearly 100 contributors for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

On Oct. 2, Emily will be For the Love of Em’s Walk Hero as Lyndeborough residents Jennifer Hanks, Hazleton and her daughters Emily, 13, and Cadence, 11, will walk the half-marathon route in this year’s Jimmy Fund Walk, crossing the Boston Marathon finish line in Copley Square. Along the way, posters of patients will be displayed for inspiration.

According to the For the Love of Em page, Emily has been making trips back and forth to Boston, undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy marrow biopsies and blood transfusions, had blood clots and hair loss, has taken numerous medications, experienced nausea and missed school.

“I am excited to get back to dancing,” she stated. “My other favorite activities include arts and crafts with Kate at the clinic and building Legos.”

Hazelton said her family is looking forward to participating in the event.

“We are all really excited to show support for the family and walk in unity,” said Hazelton.

Hazelton also said the fundraising efforts stand for more than just a contribution for her and her family.

”I think it’s a great example to show my children that when we all come together with love and unity, it can make a difference,” she said.

In its 33-year history, the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk has raised more than $155 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, all proceeds from walk will benefit cancer research and patient care.
