National Fire Prevention week was last week, but the Francestown Fire Department has extended it to spread the message of fire safety to the town all month.

Fire Chief Larry Kullgren said that while this was mostly due to the availability of staff and scheduling of the events, the importance of fire prevention could not be understated.

“Obviously the outreach is beneficial to the community members – taking the opportunity to remind everybody to be fire-wise, fire-safe,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity, as a reminder. As we say every year: check extinguishers, batteries in smoke detectors.”

The Fire Department will be hosting students from Francestown Elementary School this month to teach lessons on fire safety and prevention, and Sunday, Oct. 24, they will be having an open house at the fire station for the community from noon to 2:30 p.m. Residents can come to learn not only fire prevention methods, but also Hands Only CPR and Stop the Bleed training.

“It’s just a good reminder to bring it to the attention of the citizens of Francestown to be mindful,” said Kullgren. “It’s always key. Fire prevention is something that should be practiced all year round.”
