Letter: Ideas for ConVal

Keep and maintain all existing school buildings and facilities. They are already budgeted.

Relocate the lower grades in middle schools to all elementary schools, maximizing capacity. If a student wishes to attend a larger elementary school for a perceived "enhanced" educational opportunity, he or she may be accommodated.

Consolidate both middle schools into the one more suitable for all educational purposes. If crowding should occur, move the highest grade into ConVal.

The retention of all schools ensures adaptability if there are changes in student overall numbers (plus/minus) or in grade levels. It also preserves the town's educational identity. It is inappropriate to sell buildings and then have a need for them in the future.

This should defuse what I see as impending divisiveness and possible vitriol among neighboring towns. However a question remains – What about the vacant middle school building? It is kept, if needed in the future. It is maintained, as already stated. It is rented as an indoor marketplace, with preference to individuals/concerns of that middle school town. Profits would be equally divided between the town whose school was closed and applied to decrease the school budget, albeit minimally. It maintains the status quo of elementary schools. It addresses the situation. It is fluid to address future situations. It even makes a little money.

Vote no on changing the Articles of Agreement.
