The Friends of the Stephenson Memorial Library in Greenfield hosted local Titanic expert Will Kindler April 13.

In April of 1912 only 712 people survived the sinking of the Titanic out of the 2,208 people aboard. Kindler spoke about the history of the ship, passed around artifacts and shared stories of survivors. He also shared recovered photos from after the shipwreck and pictures of pieces of the Titanic that have been brought to the surface more recently.

Kindler said people didn’t really start talking about the Titanic until the 1950s, when the original movie came out.

“It was a dark memory,” Kindler said. “These artifacts were just around.”
