GreenfieldResident survey for town offerings

Next month, Greenfield residents will have a chance to sound off about what recreational opportunities they’d like to see in town in a forthcoming survey.

“We’re doing the survey to see if, one, the community is interested in having a Rec Department, and two, if they are, what kinds of things would they want to have in town,” organizer Kayla Kokal said, envisioning programming for both children and adults. Kokal is a nurse practitioner and mother of three young children. “Right now, if we do any activities, we’re traveling to do things,” she said. Kokal recently approached the Select Board to see about reestablishing in-town recreation programming, and gained their support in polling the community.

Greenfield voted to cut the part-time Rec Supervisor position from their budget in 2007 and hasn’t offered town-wide recreational opportunities since then, Select Board Chair Bob Marshall said, although the library, the now-defunct Woman’s Club, and other residents and organizations have led programming in years since. “We’ve been seeking volunteerism for some time,” he said. Something like a children’s sports team can be the gateway to participating in other community initiatives, including town government positions, he said. “It’s how we meet other adults in town,” he said.

Marshall acknowledged that population and demographic changes, including a dwindling number of children in town, impacts what kinds of activities and leagues a town like Greenfield can support. But, he’s excited to receive input from residents about what they’d like to see, he said.

“We’re excited and I’m hoping that it’s really going to take off,” Kokal said.
