The Greenville Fire Department spent Sunday training ice rescue skills, practicing how to retrieve people who have fallen through the ice on the Souhegan River behind the fire station.
“Experiencing a fall through the ice helps us be prepared to know what to expect should the time arise to rescue another person or an animal. While some areas of the ice may still be strong enough to support a person, you cannot always tell where thin spots are. It doesn’t take long once the ice begins to crack for you to fall through,” stated Chief Ben Buttrick.
The department holds training on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. and the second Sunday of the month at 8 a.m. The department holds a meeting on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m., which is open to the public.
The department is seeking new members. Interested residents can contact the town office, message the Greenville NH Fire Department page on Facebook or stop in the station when they see members there.
