A Greenville man has been indicted on charges related to selling fentanyl that led to the overdose death of a 30-year-old woman.

Mark McCreery, 42, of Greenville, was indicted Jan. 18 on three charges by a Hillsborough Superior Court jury. An indictment is not an indication of guilt or innocence, but shows the jury found sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial.

McCreery was indicted on charges of death resulting from dispensing a controlled drug, one count of dispensing one gram or more of fentanyl and one count of dispensing less than a gram of fentanyl. The charge of dispensing less than one gram carries the possibility of up to 7 1/2 to 15 years in prison, and the charge of dispensing a gram or more carries the potential of 40 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. The charge of sale of a drug resulting in a death carries the possibility of life in prison.

McCreery was arrested Oct. 28 by the Milford Police Department related to the death of Cassandra Jarest, 30, who died of a fentanyl toxicity overdose. According to an affidavit filed with the Hillsborough Superior Court by Milford Police Department officer Daniel Campbell, Jarest showed signs of intravenous drug use, but no drugs were located during a search of the residence. During a search of her phone, police allegedly found a text thread with a “Marcus Anthony” with conversations about drug use and securing drugs.

A message thread between Jarest and “Marcus Anthony” on Facebook allegedly indicated he had sold her drugs on Aug. 4. According to the affidavit, Jarest overdosed at her residence on Aug. 5, but was revived by emergency personnel. While police processed Jarest’s phone, she allegedly received further messages from “Marcus Anthony” regarding selling her another gram of fentanyl and paying back money he owed her.

Members of the Manchester Police Department identified the man in the Facebook profile as McCreery. In a search of his phone after his arrest, police allegedly confirmed that he had exchanged messages with Jarest.
