Local music group Grove Street will perform a concert featuring the music of Irish composer Turlough O’Carolan Sunday, March 17, at 4 p.m. at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture, 19 Grove St. in Peterborough.

The 75-minute program will be performed by Chaz Beaulieu on flute, David Duhon on cello, Eric Blackmer on acoustic guitar and Lisa Murray on piano.

Brief narration and poetry will be interspersed with the music to illuminate the life of O’Carolan, who has been dubbed by many as Ireland’s national composer.

O’Carolan, a blind itinerant Irish harpist, made his living composing and performing his tunes throughout Ireland in the late 1600s and early 1700s.

He was famous in Ireland, but he was also well known in the larger European music scene.

Beaulieu and Blackmer have been performing together for 24 years, with Duhon joining them four years ago and Murray last July. Over the years, Blackmer and Beaulieu have delved into O’Carolan’s music, captivated by his music and his story. The St. Patrick’s Day concert is a celebration of O’Carolan’s  life, times and music.

The program is free to the public, although donations are appreciated.
