Members of the Hancock Fire Department worked with mutual aid from Peterborough, Bennington and Stoddard to rescue a 35-year-old hiker who was injured after a fall near Prospect Hill Road on Sunday evening.

Hancock Fire Chief Tom Bates described conditions as wet and muddy, which led to the hiker slipping off a rocky ledge. He fell about 20 feet and slid before settling on a steep incline that was still roughly 60 feet from the ground, which complicated the rescue attempt, Bates said.

Bates noted that the hiker was not using a dedicated trail, and rescuers had to walk about 60 feet into the woods from the road in order to reach the injured man.

After extricating the hiker from the woods, rescuers determined that he sustained injuries to his leg and ankle. He was transported to Concord Hospital for treatment.
