Hancock police have charged a Hudson man with cruelty to animals; neglect.

Thomas Walsh, 37, of Hudson has been charged with nine misdemeanor counts of animal neglect, according to a June 20 press release from the Hancock Police Department.

The alleged offenses occurred in March, according to police.

On March 31, Hancock police received a report from a resident who reported “not seeing anyone in or out of their neighbor’s property for quite some time and were concerned for the animals,” police said.

The resident said, they walked down to the chicken coop, which is visible from the road, and found the animals had no access to food or water.

“We responded to meet with the subjects at the land to check the welfare of the animals. During our visit, the birds were provided food and water. The officers walked to the barn and paddock area to check for further animals and discovered an injured pig in the barn with several other pigs in a penned area. We also located deceased animals on the property. None of the living animals appeared to have access to food or water,” police said in the press release.

Police provided the animals with food and water and contacted a local veterinarian the next day. The veterinarian responded to the property to provide care to the animals.

“The veterinarian advised that the pigs needed to be quarantined until treated more extensively,” police said.

After contacting state officials on April 2, police applied for a search warrant for the premises.

“We, along with the NH Department of Agriculture, seized and removed 4 pigs and 4 ducks and 1 chicken from premises. We also located several deceased animals,” police said.

According to the June 20 press release, Walsh has already been arraigned in the 8th Circuit Court District Division in Jaffrey during which he entered a plea of not guilty.

Walsh is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on Aug. 8.
