SWIMMING

ConVal, Conant at Division II championship

The Cougars and Orioles competed at the NHIAA Division II swimming championships at UNH on Sunday.

This marked the first year ConVal fielded a swim team, thanks to a strong core of Peterborough Wave swimmers entering the high school. Junior Sophia Lake was fifth in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 200 IM; freshman Bryanna Mattson was 15th in the 50 free and junior Andrea Mattson was 13th in the 100 back.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Conant wins playoff opener

Conant, the No. 8 seed in Division III, beat No. 9 Belmont in Jaffrey handily Tuesday night, 56-44.

Manny Hodgson had a game-high 18 points while Jared Nagle was right behind with 17 and Jordan Nagle 12.

Conant (13-6) will look for a big quarterfinal upset of undefeated defending champion No. 1 Gilford (18-0) on the road Friday at 7 p.m. The Orioles lost to the Eagles twice in the regular season but took Gilford to overtime in their first meeting.

Holy Family 71, Mascenic 65

The Vikings hung tight with one of Division IV’s best on Monday night but came up short despite 16 points from Adam Stauffeneker, 14 each from Wyatt Duval and Dylan Barthel and 11 from Joe Cocozella.

Mascenic (11-6) should be the eighth seed in Division IV and should host a preliminary round playoff game Monday night, pending the NHIAA’s official schedule release.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

WLC 37, Mount Royal 29

WLC led Mount Royal wire-to-wire Tuesday night, but the home team did give the visiting Warriors a fight, coach Tom Crowley said.

“When things got close, we kept our composure,” Crowley said.

The Warriors put the game away by breaking the Mount Royal press, as Bri Fish set up Caitlin Swett for a clinching layup.

Ryleigh Smith had 14 points for WLC and Fish had 9.

At 10-8, the Warriors finish over .5oo in their first year back at the varsity level. WLC should enter the Division IV playoffs as the 10th or 11th seed with a road playoff game Tuesday.

Mascenic 40, Holy Family 22

The Vikings sent off their lone senior, Leah St. John, with a win on senior night Monday.

Mascenic finished the season with a three-game win streak and a 6-11 record, which puts them in 17th in Division IV, one spot out of the playoffs.
