New Conant head coach Tom Harvey got a thriller for his first game Monday, as the Orioles lost a close one in double overtime to visiting Hillsboro-Deering.
The Hillcats scored the first goal of the game on a penalty kick and took a 1-0 lead into the half. Conant’s Manny Hodgson tied the game up with a second-half goal, but the Orioles, despite a whopping 34 shots on goal, couldn’t muster another score.
The teams fought through regulation and the first overtime period without a winner. Eventually, Conant’s starting keeper Garrett Somero went down with an injury; his replacement, midfielder Austin Poikenen, played valiantly but ultimately surrendered the game-winner.
“This is game one, and the boys are learning a new system,” Harvey said. “I am very happy with the way they played.”
Conant (0-1) was set to host WLC (0-0) Wednesday after press time; the Orioles play again at WLC Saturday at 11 a.m.
