BOYS’ SOCCER

The ConVal boys’ soccer team started hot against rival Souhegan on Friday, shutting out the Sabers at home 4-0.

Evan Merwede scored twice and Max Richard and Fin Wegmueller scored once each in the win as ConVal outshot Souhegan 25-4.

Mather Kipka was perfect in net, with three saves. Ben Kriebel made two assists.

The Cougars (1-0) were at Kingswood (0-1) Monday afternoon and play at Lebanon (1-0) Thursday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Nikki Bell scored twice for the Cougars as ConVal shut out Lebanon on the road, 2-0, on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, Bell opened the second half by directing a corner kick on net, which a Lebanon defender pushed away with a handball. Bell put her penalty kick to the right on the ground under the diving keeper to break the ice and put ConVal up 1-0.

“We were on the back foot for the first 15 minutes,” said head coach Curt Martens. “After that, we shut them down from moving forward, keeping them from ever looking threatening, and were constantly pressing the ball and working through their backline to create multiple goal scoring opportunities.”

Bell scored again to put Lebanon away, taking a great feed from Katie Carey and faking out the Lebanon keeper for her second strike.

Lindsey Carey was flawless at goaltender, keeping the shutout intact with a diving tip on a shot by Lebanon star Zoe Soule.

Kendall Larson led the ConVal defense on the way to the clean sheet. Kara Keiper, Katie Carey, and Cami Hendrixson dominated the midfield, winning the ball and finding forward passes.

ConVal (1-0) hosts Kearsarge (0-0) Thursday at 4 p.m.
