The Dublin School girls' lacrosse team captured its first Southeastern New England Independent Schools Athletic Association (SENE) championship with a 12-4 win over St. Andrews (R.I.) in the championship game Wednesday at The MacDuffie School in Granby, Mass.

The two teams had met twice this season, with St. Andrews coming out on top both times by scores of 9-8 and 11-9. In the championship game, St. Andrews took a 1-0 lead, but Dublin four consecutive goals to build a 4-1 lead.

St. Andrews cut the lead to 4-3 heading into the halftime break, and then scored first in the second half to tie the game at 4. However, that would be their last score, as Dublin put on a dominating performance to secure the victory.

The Wildcats won draws, methodically built their offense and thwarted any attempts by St. Andrews’ offense with pressure in the midfield and tenacious defense. It all added up to an 8-0 run over the final 20-plus minutes to earn the title as SENE Champions.

Senior Erika Fantauzzi led the Wildcats with five tallies to end the season with 48 goals. Senior Abbie Switzer and sophomore Holland Calcutt each scored three goals, while junior Campbell Meyer scored one to go with her control of the draws throughout the game.

Juniors MadiLefebvre, MekoyaSandback, and Zoe Ortiz led the defense, and sophomore goaltender Adelaide DeForest made five saves.

According to head coach Brooks Johnson, senior captains Fantauzzi, Switzer, Sophie Mascielo and Kiara Robles will be missed.

“Their leadership, skill and performance have been inspirational throughout their careers at Dublin School,” he stated.

SOFTBALL

ConVal wins senior game

ConVal softball’s senior game on Wednesday began with heartfelt speeches to their six seniors from underclassman and ended with an 11-4 victory over Milford.

Senior ace Lily Mandel, who is committed to play Division III softball at Keene State College in the fall, went the distance, striking out 12 and allowing six hits, pushing her team to 9-4 on the year. Head coach Amanda Hinton stressed the importance of the win, as many teams in Division II have similar records. ConVal is currently in sixth place with a week of regular season games remaining.

“Hopefully this win will move us positionally into a better spot in the standings,” said Hinton.

ConVal’s offense gave Mandel lots of run support, scoring in every inning except the fourth ConVal came out swinging with three runs in the bottom of the first on hits by Sam Henderson (2-4, two RBI), Morgan Bemont (2-4, three RBI) and Olivia Riley (2-4, two RBI). Bemont, who is headed to American International College to play Division II softball, put the game out of reach with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Sam Henderson was proud of her team’s performance, and felt it was especially sweet on Senior Night.

“It’s so great to be able to win on Senior Night, especially against a team we’ve always struggled with,” said Henderson. “We came together as a team and we kept the energy up the entire game.”

The Cougars suffered a setback Friday night against John Stark Regional High School, losing 9-0.
