A hiker was assisted off of Mount Monadnock on Sunday after falling and sustaining a leg injury, according to a press release issued by New Hampshire Fish and Game.

On Sunday at approximately 3:45 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers were notified that Taylor Young, 21, of Rhode Island, had slipped while descending the mountain on the White Cross Trail. Young had injured her lower leg, and was unable to make it to the base of the mountain on her own power.

Mountain rangers with the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources responded and provided medical assistance, stabilizing Young’s injury. Additional rescuers responded to assist in carrying Young down the mountain in a litter. Young was about 1 1/2 miles from the park headquarters trailhead. Conservation officers, DNCR Mountain Patrol rangers and the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, along with members of the Jaffrey, New Ipswich, Rindge and Peterborough fire departments, assisted with retrieving Young.

The terrain was slick due to rainfall. During the rescue, Mia Salvati, 25, of Boston, who was assisting, slipped and injured her ankle. She was unable to finish the hike under her own power, and was also carried to park headquarters.

Crews reached the base of the mountain with Young at about 8:15 p.m. Approximately 40 responders assisted with both carryouts.
