The Jaffrey Woman’s Club honored three Jaffrey Grade School fifth-graders for their winning entries in their annual Suzanne Crossley Women’s History Essay contest.

As part of celebrating Women’s History Month, fifth-grade students are asked to research and write about a woman they admire and how they relate to her.  The winners are selected by the club’s education committee, and each is awarded a cash prize. They and their parents are invited to lunch at the club’s May annual meeting and asked to read their essays to the audience.

First-place winner Zoey Baldwin was inspired by “Silent Spring” author Rachel Carson and her love of animals, plants and writing. Second-place winner LeighAnn Freeman’s essay was about championship barrel racer Amberley Snyder, who she admires as a “determined and very accomplished person.” In a tie for third place, Brianna Grandy cites Helen Keller’s favorite quote, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows,” and co-winner Lilyana Ennis admired Princess Diana as a strong, kind, independent woman to be emulated.

The Jaffrey Woman’s Club promotes civic, cultural, and charitable projects in support of the community. Membership is open to all Monadnock-area women age 18 and older. For information, visit jaffreywomansclub.org, follow the club on Facebook or send email to jaffreywomansclub@gmail.com.
