A Jaffrey man has been sentenced to a year in jail for sexually assaulting a minor.

Bryon Whitney, 41, of Jaffrey, pleaded guilty to a felony second-degree assault charge for causing serious mental trauma to his victim, as part of a plea agreement entered at the Cheshire Superior Court on Tuesday.

Whitney had previously been charged with second-degree sexual assault for raping a 14-year-old girl in February.

According to court documents, the girl reported to a guidance counselor that in the early morning hours of Feb. 20, Whitney entered her room and had oral and penetrative sex with her. She also told police that on prior occasions, Whitney had entered her room and groped her over her clothing.

As per his plea agreement, Whitney will spend a year in jail, with 238 days credited for his pre-trial confinement.

Following his release, he will be on probation for three years.

Additional conditions of his agreement are that he will have an evaluation by a licensed drug and alcohol counselor, undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation, have no contact with his victim or any unsupervised contact with any minors other than his own biological child, and register as a Tier I sexual offender.
