Jeff King has been terminated from his job as Peterborough Recreation Director by the Select Board, Town Administrator Rodney Bartlett said in a press release Tuesday.

“This action was taken after complaints made against Mr. King led to a Town investigation which uncovered failures to follow town procedures, protocols and training. This failure has undermined, in the Town’s opinion, his ability to manage employees, and as a result he is not in the position to lead the Peterborough Recreation Department,” Bartlett said in the press release.

King had worked for the town since April 2003. As Recreation Director he had two full-time staff members, three part-time staff members and 43 seasonal employees working under him. His annual salary was $78,561.

In an interview Wednesday, Bartlett said the town received its final piece of input on the investigation from the Recreation Committee on Wednesday of last week, and the Select Board reviewed the matter on Friday, before officially dismissing King on Monday.

Bartlett said the town and Select Board would not be commenting further on the investigation that ultimately led to King’s dismissal, or what procedures or protocols he failed to follow.

On July 23, Bartlett confirmed King was on paid leave. He said King would remain on leave throughout a review process into “concerns” that were brought to town officials about King. Citing it as a personnel matter he declined to comment further at that time, including on when King was put on leave and what the nature of the concerns being investigated were.

Following King’s dismissal, Peterborough Program Coordinator Lisa Koziell-Betz, who has been heading the department while King was on leave, will continue to fill the role. Bartlett said he anticipates meeting with Koziell-Betz next week to discuss the department’s immediate needs and the process for closing out the summer season.

Bartlett said the town will take the opportunity to review the recreation director position, and bring forward any proposed changes to the department’s operation during the Select Board’s next scheduled meeting on Sept. 3.

King has not returned calls asking for comment.
