Letter: Be a better driver

My son just turned 16, and will take his license test. I've learned a lot teaching him to drive, getting his 40-plus hours in for the test.

He has passed on knowledge from Driver’s Ed class. Did you know hands should be on eight and four? This recommendation comes from airbags going off and breaking wrists. I'm not so worried about him as a driver; he is cautious. I'm worried about some of the other drivers. In my time riding with him, we've seen some crazy, impatient moves. He has been passed on double yellows, and yes, he does the speed limit, like you are supposed to.

The amount of tailgating that happens is ridiculous. We've been amazed by how many people are turning with no signal or just driving with it on. Those who don't have quite enough time to pass but go anyway then have to slam on the brake when they catch up with the next car. Forgetting to put headlights on makes it harder to see people. So please, for our new drivers who are just getting released on their own, still getting experience or just starting their driving journey, take a deep breath and give them some space.
