Lincoln, Roosevelt should be Democrat

Abraham Lincoln should be a Democrat.

Lincoln believed in government infrastructure spending and signed the legislation that made possible the transcontinental railroad. Meanwhile, we can’t get Republicans in D.C. to move on infrastructure because it will (OMG!) cost us some money.

Lincoln led our nation in war. To pay for the war, he signed our nation’s first income tax, so that everyone, particularly the wealthy, would pay their fair share of the cost. Republicans took us into an unnecessary war in Iraq, and borrowed every penny that they spent.

Lincoln championed equal rights for all, and voting rights for all. Republicans are doing everything they can to keep people from voting.

Lincoln wrote that “The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves in their separate, and individual capacities.” Republicans are working overtime to kill or damage programs that are working, like Head Start, Food Stamps and the Affordable Care Act.

Teddy Roosevelt should be a Democrat.

Roosevelt worked to get corporate money out of politics by banning political contributions by corporations. Republicans are gorging themselves on corporate money, and fight any attempts at campaign finance reform.

Teddy Roosevelt believed that the 1 percent should pay their fair share of government, so he fought for an estate tax and a progressive income tax. Republicans talk about tax cuts for the 1 percent every day.

Teddy Roosevelt was an environmentalist. Republicans are trying to eliminate national monuments, and are fighting against controls on the emissions from power plants.

Teddy Roosevelt worked to break up monopolies, so that our competitive free market system could actually work. Today’s Republicans have never seen a monopoly they don’t like.

Wait. Weren’t they Republicans? Technically, yes, but every time someone refers to the “Party of Lincoln” or the “Party of Teddy Roosevelt,” those great presidents roll over in their graves. We will cure this by formally inducting Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt into the Democratic Party.

Abe and Teddy will appear, in person, to accept their induction to the Democratic Party. Won’t you come too? Given how close the dinner is to Halloween, you are encouraged to come as your favorite historical figure. We promise you good food, good company, some rousing Democratic songs, and a minimum of blah-blah.

This dinner will be hosted by the Peterborough Dems Committee. All proceeds will go towards N.H. Democrat candidates. Tickets for this event are available through Peterborough Dems Committee members. Cost is $190 for table of six, $65 for couple, individual tickets are $40 each. Send checks to Cathy Lanigan at 28 Concord St., Peterborough, N.H. 03458. Checks should be made out to Peterborough Democrat Committee.
