Trump era is painful for many

To the Editor:

The Trump era is proving painful for many. They are literally sickened – in mind, body, and spirit – living in a world where a self-indulgent and capricious leader demonstrates he is capable of anything. Even some supporters are doubting his ability to be President. He lacks the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness to perform the functions of his job. Policies should reflect the President’s view of the common good, not his personal peeves and grievances. Trump shows neither awareness of nor respect for the values we share. As if these shortcomings aren’t bad enough, he demonstrates daily that he has no heart.

Within these challenging times, I see a bright spot. Our democracy has been withering, mostly unnoticed, by those comfortably indoctrinated into the consumer culture. Fewer people vote, fewer understand how government works, fewer run for office or fight back against the growing influence of the mega-wealthy and the hard right demagogues who are taking over at all levels of government. The behavior of Trump and his radical right partners is so threatening to our values, norms, and spirit, it is creating a counter-revolution - an awakening among the previously complacent public. So much that we have taken for granted is now threatened.

Newton's third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This could account for the widespread, worldwide resistance to Trump. We are being swept up and forced to take residence in his wounded, ego-driven world. We are fighting back to save our democracy and our souls.
