Why we need a new library in Peterborough

To the editor,

I would like to respond to the letter from Bernard Woods, asking why we need a new library.

We need a new library to meet the technology demands of the 21st century. We need a new library to be accessible to all, including the disabled and the aging. We need a new library to provide a safe and welcoming space for our youth. We need a new library to provide meeting space for small groups such as students and remote workers.

We need a new library to provide a large meeting room with good air and acoustics for community-wide events.

We need a new library to improve energy efficiency. We need a new library in order to provide a safe environment for patrons and staff.

We need a new library because the people of Peterborough deserve a building that meets the needs of the 21st century. I invite Mr. Wood and any other interested citizens to read the “Preliminary plans and justification sheet report for the Capital Improvements Committee,” which explains far better than I why we need a new library. This can be found at the library website: peterboroughtownlibrary.org/library project.

I agree with Mr. Woods that taxpayers matter, and to that end, a capital campaign committee is working tirelessly to raise as much as they can in private funds for this highly worthwhile project.
