Four regional Destination Imagination teams have returned from the organization’s Globals competition, held last week.

Destination Imagination is a club where students must work together to meet challenge goals in a variety of topics – including science, engineering, improv and fine arts. The top teams from state competitions from all 50 United States as well as international teams are selected to compete at the highest level of competition, held this year from May 22-25 in Kansas City Missouri.

The Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative and the Mascenic Regional School Districts each sent a high school and elementary school team to the Globals competition.

“It really was the experience of their short lifetimes,” said Susan Shaw-Sarles, principal of Jaffrey Grade School. “It was a huge event, and they had the opportunity to do some workshops and exploring of the city, so they really took advantage of the opportunity.”

The Highbridge Hill Elementary School team, The Gumdrop Gang, participated in the Monster Effects challenge, tying for 28th place out of 74 schools. The high school team, The Target Masters, took part in the On Target challenge, placing 36th out of 50 teams.

The Rolling 20s, the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative High School team, placed 22nd out of 50 teams participating in the Game On challenge. The Jaffrey Grade School team, The Catastrophes, placed 48th out of 75 teams.

Aside from their final scores, Shaw-Sarles said the Jaffrey Grade School team also took pride in its individual achievements. A young team made up of mostly first-time members, the team was able to improve its score on the “instant challenge” portion of the competition, where the team has to work together and improvise a spontaneous solution to a challenge.

“That was something that was hard for them at the Regional and State competitions, but at Globals, they got 85 out of 100 points,” Shaw-Sarles said. “They were really proud of that.”
