The Mascenic boys’ soccer team had the wind in their face and their backs against the wall as halftime approached on Wednesday. The No. 7 Vikings trailed No. 10 Sanborn 2-0 in the Division III first-round game as Mascenic battled blustery winds in the first half.

“We had a hard time clearing the ball in the first half because the wind was roaring,” coach Andy Helliesen said.

But the Vikings played it right from the start, and when the teams switched ends for the second half, the momentum shifted as well.

Dawson Somero scored once and Nate Wilkins scored two more to give Mascenic the 3-2 comeback win. Matt Wilkins had two assists.

“Lot of character today,” Helliesen said, adding that Dylan Vaillancourt, Sam Stauffeneker, Shea Zina and Zack Barthel played excellent games.

Mascenic plays a quarterfinal round game at No. 2 Belmont Saturday at 2 p.m.
