Vikings boys volleyball lost its first match of the year Friday in a three-game sweep to the Timberlane Owls.

The match at Mascenic Regional High School was never close, as Timberlane never trailed after the first game and won the three consecutive games by scores of 25-13, 25-11 and 25-12.

“They’re arguably the best team in the state, so coming in we knew it’d be difficult,” coach Lauren Somero said after the match. “Coming in undefeated I thought we’d put up more of a battle.”

She thinks the challenge was good for her team and that it will improve moving forward.

“If anything, I think it helped show some of our weaknesses so we know what we need to work on,” she said.

The defeat came despite gritty play from those on the floor.

Michael Sullivan was the Vikings’ vocal and defensive leader, often fielding serves. He finished with 2 kills, 1 block, 1 dig and no errant serves.

The statistical leaders were Jacob Zina with 3 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs, Brett Stauffeneker with 2 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs, and Micah Howard with 5 kills, 1 block and 1 dig.

After the game, Howard noted how frustrating the defeate was, commending Timberlane.

“They got under my skin today,” he said. “I got pretty upset, but you can’t win them all.”

Until now, Mascenic had won them all. They opened the season with wins against Londonderry and Keene, and earlier last week took down Souhegan. In those three victories, the Vikings only lost two games, one to each Keene and Londonderry to go with a sweep of Souhegan.

The win moved Timberlane, which has played the most matches already in the league, to a perfect record of 7-0 in matches. More impressively, it also has a perfect record of 21-0 in games. The Owls were the state runner-up in 2016.

Mascenic looks to start winning them all again next week at Salem on April 28. The next home game for the Vikings is Monday, May 1, against John Stark.
