The deliberative session for the Mascenic Regional School District is coming up this Saturday, Feb. 4. It is the last chance for residents to make comments and vote for changes to the district’s proposed 2017-18 budget and other warrant articles.

The articles up for vote next month include controversial proposals to cut an art teaching position at Mascenic Regional High School, and create an independent committee to create future school budgets.

The proposed budget up for discussion at the deliberative session is $18,634,703. It is a 1.7 percent increase from last year’s approved budget. Should that fail at the ballot , the district would honor the default budget, $18,568,888, which is calculated as the same as last year’s approved budget with contractually obligated changes, mostly in salaries and from the collective bargaining agreement.

In the proposed budget, the lone faculty cut is the high school art position. The district said it would be “fiscally irresponsible” to keep given enrollment data.

Other warrants up to discuss surround the newly negotiated collective bargaining agreement, special education funding, future school maintenance, and the budget committee, a committee would be comprised of elected officials from Greenville and New Ipswich and take budget control away from the school board. The proposing parties say there is a benefit to an additional level of review. The board says there is harm in adding another level of bureaucracy.

The session is Saturday, at Mascenic Regional High School, at 9 a.m.
