After the Mascenic Regional School District was notified of another positive case within the district this week, and with rising transmission rates in the community, the School Board voted unanimously to enter full remote learning at all three of the district’s schools through Jan. 4.

On Thursday, as the state recorded its highest single-day total to date, with more than 300 new cases, the School Board met to discuss the issue of rising cases locally and within the district. Four new cases were reported in New Ipswich Thursday, bringing the total of active cases to 11.

In an interview Friday morning, Superintendent Chris Martin said the district has been notified of an additional positive COVID-19 case, with several primary contacts in the district.

“Our administration is spending our days contact tracing, with situations happening with increasing frequency,” Martin said Friday.

The district had already implemented remote learning at Highbridge Hill Elementary School due to a COVID-19 case among the staff, which led to eight other staff having to quarantine due to being in close proximity, plus an additional quarantine due to an unrelated exposure.

Highbridge Hill Elementary was initially on a remote learning schedule through Nov. 30 due to the staffing shortage. That date has been extended through Jan. 4, and Mascenic Regional High School and Boynton Middle School, which were still having in-person learning four days a week, have also gone remote through the holidays.

Martin said rather than continuing to yo-yo between remote learning and in-person learning as more cases are reported, the district has decided to go with a consistent model.

The School Board unanimously agreed to the proposal during an emergency meeting Thursday.
