Due to time constraints, the Mascenic Regional School Board has decided to name an interim superintendent before resuming its search in the fall.

School Board Chair Jeff Salmonson said in an email that the short notice left by Superintendent Ruthann Goguen’s resignation did not leave enough time to conduct an ideal search. The temporary replacement would serve for one year.

Salmonson wrote, “The Mascenic School Board will not have adequate time to perform a thorough search process for the most qualified candidate to lead our district.”

Goguen was offered a position to lead the Webster School District in Massachusetts. Her resignation was accepted at a Mascenic Regional School Board meeting on April 3 and will be effective July 1.

The district advertises open positions on School Spring, an online education job board. Once an interim superintendent begins work, Salmonson said, the board will reopen its search for a permanent superintendent. He indicated this would be in the fall, and the person hired could begin with the 2018-19 school year.

Salmonson said the New Hampshire School Board Association will help with identifying a suitable, qualified interim. The same process was taken before Goguen began in 2014.

He also indicated that the board would appoint “Mascenic Education Stakeholders” to serve on the search committee. At the April 3 meeting, it was decided that Salmonson and Steve Spratt would be the board’s representatives on the search committee.

The New Hampshire Department of Education requires an acting superintendent, who must have proper superintedent certification, at all times. Mascenic does not have a position of assistant superintent, which would have to be filled by a certified person, and there is no one currently on staff who is certified. The board is considering creating an assistant superintendent position to replace the position of director of student services.
