Two women rescued from woods in Mason after ATV got stuck

The Mason Police Department rescued two lost and stuck ATV riders from the woods on Monday night.

The department initiated a search for the women after receiving a call reporting someone in the woods screaming for help off of Starch Mill Road, according to a post on the Mason Police Department website. Fire and EMS were dispatched at 7:45 p.m., to the area of the Georgia Stone Quarry.

Police located a stranded and lost woman from Milford. The woman reported that she and a friend had been on an ATV about a mile up the power lines, and their ATV had gotten stuck. The woman reported that she had been calling for help for several hours. During that time, she had lost her shoes and waded through water almost to her waist while seeking help.

According to police, she had been separated from her friend, also an adult woman from Milford, who was still missing. Police began an extensive search assisted by the Mason Fire Department, Mason EMTs, Brookline Ambulance, Brookline Fire Department, Greenville Fire Department, the Temple-Greenville Police Department, the Milford Police Department and the Hollis Police Department, as well as the Hollis Police Department’s drone unit.

The second woman was located by the Greenville Fire Department on a trail in Brookline at about 10:05 p.m., after three hours of searching, based on last known coordinates determined by pinging the woman’s cellphone. Both women were assessed by EMS personel.

Searchers used department utility vehicles owned by the Brookline and Greenville fire departments in the search.

“The UTVs made what would have been an insurmountable task achievable. These machines cover large spans of terrain you could not walk through with ease and made finding the subject possible. This was a complete team effort from multiple agencies.” Mason Fire Chief Anthony Burns stated.
