During Saturday’s Mason Elementary School deliberative session, the district honored School Board Chair Chris Guiry, who is retiring this year after many years on the board, stretching back to before Mason was its own district.
Kristen Kivela, the principal of Mason Elementary School and district superintendent, spoke of Guiry and “the profound impact he’s had on our school district, students and community.”
“His unwavering dedication, leadership and passion for education has shaped the path for future generations. Through countless hours of service, thoughtful decisions and a true commitment to the well-being of our students, Doctor Guiry has made an indelible mark,” Kivela said.
Guiry has long been a public figure in Mason, not only serving on the School Board, but having spent nine years as a member of the Select Board. He was a member of both the Mascenic School Board and Mason Select Board when Mason undertook the long process of leaving the Mascenic School District and setting up its own district.
That process, which took several years of discussion and rounds of voting, ultimately resulted in the new Mason district taking out a $5 million bond to purchase, renovate and expand the Mason Elementary School.
Guiry was considered one of the leaders in the withdrawal process, between the School Board, Select Board and the withdrawal committee.
“Doctor Guiry’s efforts have always been driven by a vision of a better, brighter future for all our students. Whether advocating for resources, spearheading the creation of our own SAU or ensuring academic excellence, he has been a steadfast champion for education,” Kivela said.
Kivela thanked Guiry for his long service, and his commitment to the school.
