Mason voters passed the entirety of the town warrant during Town Meeting Saturday, including a request to accept a gift of land to use as a town forest.

Voters worked through the town’s warrant in short order, Town Moderator Cathy Schwenk said in an interview Saturday morning, taking about an hour and a half to go through the warrant.

The last article on the warrant was to accept a gift of 72 acres off Wilton Road, offered to the town by resident Walter Valentine as a gift to be turned into a town forest.

“This is our first town forest,” Schwenk said.

Voters approved the measure in a voice vote, she said.

The budget, proposed at $1.85 million, was approved with two small amendments, Schwenk said. One was to increase Schwenk’s moderator stipend by $185. The other, proposed by a member of the recreation committee, was to decrease the parks and recreation activities budget from $1,000 to $1, as the committee had the funds from another source, Schwenk said.

The only other article, which was amended at Town Meeting, was a request to add $15,000 to the highway equipment capital reserve. Resident Mark Arsenault proposed doubling that request, an amendment, which was accepted by the crowd who then passed the article as amended, Schwenk said.

Schwenk said the highway department and the condition of town roads was of high concern among residents who attended the meeting.

“There was a lot of discussion of town roads, as there has been for the last few years,” Schwenk said. “The people were very supporting of the highway department and what they’re trying to do to get them in order.”

All other articles passed in voice votes.
