The Mason Fire Department is attempting to restart its Fire Explorer program to revitalize the department and attract new members.

The Fire Explorer program is designed for teenagers who are interested in learning more about how local fire departments work and get some hands-on experience with the fire service.

Chief Flip Phalon said the said the Mason Fire Department has hosted an Explorer program before, and several full members of the department started in the program. However, the Explorer post disbanded about three years ago due to lack of interest. Now, Phalon said, the department is looking for interested teens to reestablish the post.

“Our Explorers, they train with the regular fire fighters as much as they can. They can see what we’re doing, participate, and it gets them excited to get their hands right into it,” Phalon said. “They’re as involved as we can make them.”

Phalon said one of the main benefits for the department is that Explorer programs often create new permanent additions to the department when members come of age. That is an increasing concern for rural departments, Phalon said, which have been perennially struggling with membership for volunteer stations which rely on volunteers who usually have day jobs and are not available to respond to emergencies during daytime hours.

“We have three people in our department currently, who were on the Mason Explorers in the past. It’s definitely been beneficial to us. It’s hard in a small town when you have just a few people. It’s one of the downfalls of living in a small town.”

Members of the Mason Explorers are not required to be a resident in town. Anyone who is interested in joining should contact the Mason Fire Department at
