Two lost hikers were found on the Purgatory Falls trails, after a search effort on Sunday night.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers, and of the Lyndeborough Fire Department were called to Mont Vernon on Sunday to locate hikers Nicholas Munoz, 22, of Revere, Massachusetts, and Johanna Mendez, 20, of Lynn, Massachusetts, according to a press release issued by Fish and Game.

The two were hiking the area of Purgatory Falls on the Lyndeborough/Mont Vernon town line late on Sunday afternoon, when they became disoriented and could not find their way out.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., when darkness was falling, Munoz called 911 to report that they were lost. Through the call, police dispatchers were able to obtain GPS coordinates and relay them to Conservation Officers to help pinpoint a search area.

Searchers located the hikers at approximately 9:45 p.m., and escorted back to their vehicle safely and uninjured.

Conservation officers would like to remind hikers to prepare for the unexpected by leaving adequate time to hike and by carrying essential equipment, including headlamps and trail maps.
