Nordic skiing: Michalak, Bates lead Team New England

Nordic skiers Schuyler Michalak of Peterborough and Lilly Bates of Dublin helped lead Team New England to a coveted Alaska Cup victory at the U.S. Cross-Country Junior Nationals in Anchorage, Alaska over the weekend.

Team New England beat out nine other teams grouped geographically by regions.

Bates and Michalak teamed up for a seventh-place finish in the 3KM relay.

Individually, Michalak had a ninth-place finish in the sprint classic race, a 15th-place finish in the mass start classic race, and a 19th-place finish in the 5KM freestyle.

Bates was 23rd in the 5KM freestyle, 32nd in the sprint classic and 30th in the mass start classic.

After Team New England in first place, the finishers were: Alaska, Midwest, Intermountain, Rocky Mountain, Pacific Northwest, Far West, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes and High Plains.
