The Monadnock Regional Milers running group has plans to unite the running community this summer with the Monadnock Area Grand Prix race series. The 14-race Grand Prix is made up of existing races which raise money for local community benefit.

“We're trying to boost the race participation so these races do survive and they do well for their causes,” said Milers member Ginger Smith. Smith said that in recent years, longtime races like the Francestown Five or Dublin’s Terry Dwyer race have folded, leaving a void for local runners who want to hit the road in the summertime.

“They were staples,” Smith said.

So, the Milers put together a list of 14 races in the area, beginning with Saturday’s Spring Fling at ConVal High School, to make up the Grand Prix series. Participate in seven races, get a cool prize; race in ten, and get an even better one, and do all 14 and get the top reward. All the races are benefits for one community organization or another. The Spring Fling is a fundraiser for the ConVal track team; next up is the Greenfield Fire Department fundraiser 5K, and so on.

“Everything has a benefit that's community-based,” Smith said. “So our idea is to get people to come to these races, have a carrot in front of their nose so they will participate and help these races raise money for their causes.”

To participate, simply register for any of the races as normal and then sign in with the Milers day-of. There is no additional fee beyond the regular entry fees of the races.

The first entry is Saturday at ConVal High School. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the race starts at 10. Adults are $15 in advance, $20 day-of. Kids are $10 in advance and $15 day-of.
